cell phones come in handy if you're stuck in the middle of nowhere and have no chance of getting in contact with someone, any other way. don't forget about text messaging and stuff, well, you can do a hell of a lot more with the phones of today, but you know, mainly phoning to ask people if they wanna go out and stuff.
